THE SCIENCE BEHIND HITCHECK

Recent studies suggest concussions happen more often than previously thought (upwards of 2.5MM go undetected each year). If left undetected, a concussion can cause serious, long-term issues. Unfortunately, warning signs can be difficult to spot with the naked eye.

Drawing on decades of medical research, HitCheck takes prevailing standardized testing methods and translate them into a short, simple mobile assessment you can administer immediately whenever and wherever a concussion is suspected. Each test measures a specific aspect of brain performance, such as coordination, memory, reaction time, etc. Once the test is complete, HitCheck captures, records and compares these objective, quantitative results with your prior performance and highlights changes in brain functions that could require additional medical attention.

Note: Quickly access and manage your personal and teams plans on your iPhone, iPad, iPod or desktop computer. Due to the performance tracking nature of HitCheck, it is important to only administer tests with a smartphone.

*HitCheck is not intended to diagnose concussions or make return-to-play decisions. Rather, the app is only one component of a concussion diagnosis and management protocol. A complete concussion and return-to-play assessment should not be made based on the data in the app alone, and should only be made after a user has received a medical examination by a qualified medical professional.

HOW TO USE THIS APP

The app is free and provides the professor and student the opportunity to explore the symptoms and treatment of a concussion.  Using the app (for tablets and smartphones), the student can check off symptoms to determine a diagnosis of concussion, severity, and treatment.

The app is useful when the discussion of brain and nervous system are coupled with head injury and sports. Given the discovery of CTE in sports due to head injuries, this app can also be useful in discussion of organic psychosis in the abnormal/psychopathology chapters.
