THIS IS A BONUS “BEST OF PRESENTATION” OF FALL 2019

TITLE

‘Gaming Disorder’ Is Now an Official Medical Condition, According to the WHO

DESCRIPTION

This article will engage the class and stimulate a good discussion of “gaming disorder.  “According to the new definition, gaming behavior shifts into a disorder when it takes precedence over other daily activities, and starts to impair a person’s relationships, school or work responsibilities for at least a year.”   Most importantly for the Psychology course is the part of the article that focuses on whether enough research has been completed to genuinely consider gaming to be a disorder or whether it is part of an overall behavioral addiction which includes internet use, social media, texting, and so on.  A good idea is for the class to consider how research into gaming could be performed.

CLASS DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

•What is “gaming disorder?”

•Why has the World Health Organization considered it to be a serious enough problem to be labeled a “disease?”

•The article posits different perspectives on the accuracy of the research.  What are the perspectives?

Using the principles of Psychology as a Science design an experiment that would help answer the question as to whether gaming is an actual addiction.
