TITLE
How to Harness Your Anxiety
DESCRIPTION
What a great article! After explaining what anxiety is and is not, the author discusses how anxiety can be a useful tool to cope with everyday events as opposed to viewing it as debilitating. “You don’t have to like the experience of anxiety to use it effectively. It’s designed to be uncomfortable so you pay attention and do what you need to make it stop. Much like a baby’s cry, anxiety lets you know there is an issue that needs addressing. Just as you try to figure out why the baby is in distress and resolve it, you must work to determine what your anxiety is trying to tell you. Once you determine that and start executing solutions, you’ll notice the anxiety begins to dissipate.” This article would be useful in discussion Health Psychology, coping with stress, Abnormal Psychology and treatment.

CLASS DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
•What is ANXIETY? What are the different types/classifications/diagnostic categories?
•What are the symptoms? Causes? Treatments?
•What are the recommendations to “harness” anxiety?
•Is meditation effective as a means to treat anxiety? When is it recommended? What are the “tips” presented in the article?
•If interested in a discussion, then ask students about their own anxiety experiences and ways to cope. Certainly one focus can be on the area of “test anxiety” in college courses and ways to cope. Also, in a humorous vein, first dates can be a topic about anxious moments in everyday living.
