Is ADHD Different for Women and Girls?

DESCRIPTION

This is an important article in that it clears up the misconception that ADHD is disorder more common to boys than to girls.  The author points out that ADHD may be as prevalent in girls but that the symptom pattern is different.  “ADHD is a bit of a misnomer—because it can exist with or without the “H.” And while girls can certainly be hyperactive, they more often fall into the category without the H, called ADHD Inattentive Type. For these girls, ADHD looks more like dreaminess, spaciness. They get written off as ditzy or dumb, and because they’re not disruptive like individuals with the hyperactive subtype, they fly under the radar. In other words, because they’re generally well-behaved, girls often miss out on diagnosis that could get them treatment and valuable academic accommodations.”  Further, another probable symptom found in girls and women is low self-esteem, and the author provides examples.  This article should be used in conjunction with the developmental chapters in the textbook and highlights the issues of the nature-nurture debate as well.  The article includes a 10 minute audio segment.

People With ADHD Try Fidget Spinners For A Week (YouTube Video)

DESCRIPTION

This is a fun video to watch and can be a trigger piece for a discussion.

It seems that Fidget Spinners are the fad of the moment being sold in toy stores, groceries, and by street vendors.  People make claims that the Fidget Spinners help them deal better with their ADHD and Anxieties.  Do they really help?  Or are they more of a distraction?  This is a fun 6 minute video to show to a class and discuss the issue.  The best assignment would be to ask the class to design an experiment to answer the question as to whether the Fidget Spinner claims are valid.
